Mr. Hastings was considered an ally to my place of work. He’s helped us with our larger projects. The news of his loss was immense to our workplace and here is what we’ve gleaned so far.

Timeline Week of 6/3:
-Hastings is in NYC, speaks to Ben Smith, his editor at Buzzfeed and BNF’s Mike.
-Michael speaks with one of my coworkers (we work at a non-profit documentary house on international affairs) who was working for another coworker who was out on vacation. We were helping him set up a call to Islamabad to speak with 3 of our contacts for a drone documentary we are working on. He calls in and is VERY anxious and paranoid on the phone. He explains he’s really unnerved about how he found something explosive on Brennan and the CIA. My coworker is freaked out and mentions it to our boss. This was 3 weeks ago.
-Michael is researching a story on a privacy lawsuit brought by Jill Kelley against the DoD and FBI for her implication in the Paula Broadwell/ General Petraus affair. “Kelley alleges that military officials and the FBI leaked her name to the media to discredit her after she reported receiving a stream of emails that were traced to Paula Broadwell, a biographer of former CIA director David H. Petraeus, according to a lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., on June 3.”
Hours before Hasting’s 6/18 crash:
-Hastings contacts Jennifer Robinson, lawyer for Wikileaks. He says that the FBI is investigating him
Approximately 4:30am 6/18: After watching the “LoudLab News” video of the crash, we noticed one of the eyewitnesses wearing a mechanic uniform with the name tag “Jose” and “ALSCO”. On a VERY long shot I googled and called up the number of the business listed on Highland. After a humorous “We have lots of Jose’s here, sir” I articulated that if she knew of anyone who saw the aforementioned crash on Highland just south of Melrose. “Oh, I know exactly who you are talking about”. I proceeded to have a Spanish-speaking colleague help translate exactly what he saw.
Eyewitness of Hastings crash account by Jose Rubalacava, a mechanic at Alsco, 818 500 9490: Jose is at Donuts Jumbo, before going to work at Alsco, around 4:25am. He was going to get into his car when he heard the loud noise of an engine and saw Hasting’s car speeding down the street at approximately, 160mph. He said it looked like he was trying to kill himself because he was going so fast. Jose relayed that as Hasting’s sped down Highland, he could see sparks flying from what he believed to be the Mercedes gas canister, as the car hit potholes along the street. He thought Hastings was going to get hit, but then he hit the palm and the car immediately caught on fire, he believes because of a possible gas leak caused by the potholes Hasting had been hitting at such high speeds. Jose thought the driver had been African American since upon inspection Hasting’s face and body were so charred from the fire. He also indicated that the car’s transmission had been propelled by the impact of the crash and had landed several meters from the site.
-“Mr. Hastings was believed to have been alone in the car, which struck a tree at high speed, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office,” the New York Times reported.
-And now for the conspiracy theories…“Photographs of the crash scene, however, reveal that the car Hastings was in did not experience a high-speed crash. “There is no impact damage to this car. The only damage there is BLOWN OUT in the back, not smashed in the front and it obviously missed the tree as it rolled to a stop,” writes Jim Stone. “This was a Mercedes, not a Pinto, which means it did not burst into flames on its own. One (seldom quoted) eyewitness said the car ‘exploded,’” Stone continues. “No matter how you slice this particular pie, a Mercedes is not just going to explode into flames without a little assistance,” Stone explains. “Car fires in new cars happen for three main reasons — running the engine out of oil, or running the engine out of coolant, or after an absolutely huge car mangling accident, having the hot side of the battery short out against the frame before it reaches the fuse panel. And for all 3 of those normal reasons, which account for virtually all car fires in modern cars, the fire would have started in the engine compartment, progressed slowly, and scorched the hell out of the paint before ever reaching the gas tank. 6/19: -On Wednesday night, the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks inserted itself into the story, publishing a message on Twitter that Hasting had contacted a lawyer for the organization hours before his car smashed into a tree on North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles. The message read: “Michael Hastings contacted WikiLeaks lawyer Jennifer Robinson just a few hours before he died, saying that the FBI was investigating him.”

-LAPD states “there appears to be no foul play” involved in Hastings’ death. “LAPD officials said the incident appears to have been an accident and that no other vehicles were involved. The email was sent around 1 p.m. on Monday, June 17: Subject: FBI Investigation, re: NSA Hey (redacted names) — the Feds are interviewing my “close friends and associates.” Perhaps if the authorities arrive “BuzzFeed GQ,” er HQ, may be wise to immediately request legal counsel before any conversations or interviews about our news-gathering practices or related journalism issues.
